The city was founded in 1801 as the site of the University of Georgia, which has grown to national prominence. The area was also important from the early 1800s for its cotton mills, and became known as the “Manchester of the South.” Athens was spared any significant destruction in the Civil War and became a center for professional and middle class African-Americans during Reconstruction. The city also was the site of training for US Navy pilots during World War II.
